Mobile Phone Brain Cancer Link Rejected

Further research has been published suggesting there is no link between mobile phones and brain cancer.
The risk mobiles present has been much debated over the past 20 years as use of the phones has soared.
The latest study led by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Denmark looked at more than 350,000 people with mobile phones over an 18-year period.
Researchers concluded users were at no greater risk than anyone else of developing brain cancer.
The findings, published on the British Medical Journal website, come after a series of studies have come to similar conclusions.

At the Gartner Symposium IT/Expo, David Cappuccio, managing vice president and chief of research for the Infrastructure teams with Gartner, said the Top 10 Trends show how IT is changing in that many of them in the past been outside the traditional purview of IT, but they will all affect how IT does its job in the future.
The Top 10 Trends and their impact, briefly include:
1 The evolution of virtualization: Cappuccio says virtualization will ultimately drive more companies to treat IT like a business. The danger during the next few years will be in following a specific vendor’s vision, though it is unlikely that any one vendor’s vision will prevail. Users should have their own visions of architecture control, and build toward it with a constantly updated strategic plan.
2 Big data, patterns and analytics: Unstructured data will grow some 80% over the course of the next five years, creating a huge IT challenge. Technologies such as in-line deduplication, automated tiering of data to get the most efficient usage patterns per kilowatt, and flash or solid-state drives for higher-end performance optimization, will increase in importance over the next few years, Cappuccio said. Analytics and other systems to monitor for recurring data patterns that could develop into money making applications will also be important.
3. Energy efficiency and monitoring: The power issue has moved up the food corporate food chain, Cappuccio said. Nascent tools are beginning to roll out that can use analytic tools to watch power usage on a variety of levels. With the increased attention given to power consumption, it has become apparent that many systems are highly underutilized. At low utilization levels, they use a high percentage of their total energy draw. An average x86 server that is turned on, but idle, will draw upward of 65% of its nameplate wattage, for example. IT organizations need a clear inventory of what compute resources are doing and what workloads there is the potential for significant waste of energy.
4. Context aware apps: The big question here how to do something smart to take advantage of smartphones. Gartner has in the past said context-based computing will go beyond the business intelligence applications and truly make a unified communications environment possible by bringing together data culled from social networks and mobile-devices.
5. Staff retention and retraining: Here the idea is developing a plan to get people excited about their jobs enough to stay. And we’ll need is as starting in 2011 an average of 10,000 baby boomers will be eligible to retire every day for the next 19 years, Cappuccio said. Loyalty to one company is not a quality found in new workers.
6. Social networks: Affordable and accessible technology has let individuals and communities come together in a new way – with a collective voice – to make statements about our organizations, the products/services we deliver and how we deliver them, Cappuccio said. The collective is made up of individuals, groups, communities, mobs, markets and firms that shape the direction of society and business. The collective is not new, but technology has made it more powerful -and enabled change to happen more rapidly Cappuccio said. The collective is just beginning to have an impact on business operations and strategies but most organizations do not have a plan for enabling or embracing it. Ignoring social networking is not an option, Cappuccio said.
7. Consumerization: The key trend here is the fact that new application types will be developed to address mobile users but they won’t be desktop replacement applications. Still, a secure, well-defined strategy needs to be put into place to take advantage of this development, Cappuccio said.
8. Compute per square foot: Virtualization is one of the most critical components being used to increase densities and vertically scale data centers. If used wisely, average server performance can move from today’s paltry 7% to 12% average to 40% to 50%, yielding huge benefits in floor space and energy savings. Two issues that need to be considered going forward are the number of cores per server — four- and eight-core systems are becoming common, and 16 cores will be common within two years – and overall data center energy trends. IT will also have to address things like performance/licensing, Cappuccio said
9. Cloud computing: While cost is a potential benefit for small companies, the biggest benefits of cloud computing are built-in elasticity and scalability. As certain IT functions industrialize and become less customized, such as email, there are more possibilities for larger organizations to benefit from cloud computing, according to Cappuccio.
10. Fabrics: Gartner defines this infrastructure convergence as: The vertical integration of server, storage, and network systems and components with element-level management software that lays the foundation to optimize shared data center resources efficiently and dynamically. Systems put forth so far by Cisco and HP will unify network control but are not there yet.

SMS Text Message Turns 19 Years Old

According to Wikipedia, the first SMS text message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, from a man named Neil Papworth using a personal computer to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone using an Orbitel 901 handset.

The text of the message was “Merry Christmas”.

The technology behind the SMS text is 27-years old, having first been developed in the Franco-German GSM cooperation in 1984 by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert. It was then, eight years later, that the “Merry Christmas” text was sent.
The Text Message turns 19 years old todaySince then, SMS technology has come a long way to dominant the current mobile messaging scene. In 2010, SMS texts generated $114.6 billion in revenues worldwide, but many believe it’s just the beginning. Experts estimate that mobile networks will earn $726 billion from SMS text messaging over the next five years. So while smartphone applications like GroupMe and services like Apple’s iMessage start to make up larger slices of the text messaging field, SMS is not giving up its mobile messaging throne anytime soon.

When was the First Mobile Phone Invented?

The first mobile phone invented is rooted in the history and technology of the hand held radio. Two way radios, or mobile rigs, were widely used by taxis and emergency services prior to the invention of the first mobile or cellular phones. Two way radios allowed communication among vehicles and stations within a defined group, but they were not really the first mobile phones. Mobile rigs did not use the telephone network and users could not dial out to standard telephone numbers.

The first mobile phone call was made by a truck driver as an experiment in the summer of 1946 from a phone weighing close to 80 pounds. The experiment was considered a success but mobile phone technology was far from commonplace.

By 1948, wireless telephone service was available in almost 100 cities. Mobile phone customers numbered about 5,000 with 30,000 calls being made weekly. Mobile phone service was considered very expensive at about fifteen dollars a month with an additional 30 to 40 cent charge per call.

Limited mobile phone service was available, providing for about three calls to take place at one time in any service area. The first mobile phone users would wait and listen for a line to open up as others users finished their mobile phone calls.

The first hand held mobile phone call was made by Martin Cooper, who led the team that developed the first hand held mobile phones. Cooper made his phone call on April 3, 1973 on a prototype Dyna-Tac phone that weighed about 2.5 lb (1.1 kg). The call

Mobile phone service capabilities improved in 1982 when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the establishment of a mobile phone system and allocated a limited number of analog frequencies to be used by the network.

At this time, mobile phones were not cellular. Mobile phone signals were conducted by largetransmission towers and conversations were tied to a single tower’s transmission area. This meant a mobile phone user could not leave the designated transmission area during a conversation. The number of transmission towers was limited, each requiring significant frequency space.

In the early to mid eighties, mobile phones were commonly called car phones as they were permanently mounted in automobiles. These phones were followed by bag phones that utilized a portable mobile phone housed in a bag with plugs adapted to receive power from a car’s cigarette lighter.

A significant breakthrough in mobile phone technology came when the mobile phone system became cellular. The introduction of cellular mobile phones allowed users to move in and out of tower frequency areas while on a call. This freedom of movement made the device much more useful than the first mobile phone.

Cellular technology was invented by Joel Engel and Richard Frenkiel, two researchers for AT&T Labs, in 1983. They introduced the cellular concept of replacing large broadcast towers, with smaller low powered towers.

Each of these smaller towers would cover an area, or cell, of only a few miles. The technology allowed calls to be passed from cell to cell. Although each tower covered a relatively small radius, by passing calls from tower to tower, the system was capable of covering large areas. By this time, the FCC had allocated more frequencies to the system. Each cell tower required less frequency space but more towers were needed. Mobile callers could now move about freely while on their phones.

Cellular technology has advanced significantly from that used when the first in the first mobile phone invented.

What Are the Different Types of Mobile Phone Operating Systems?

There are many different mobile phone operating systems currently being used. Some of the most well-known include Symbian, BlackBerry OS, iOS, Windows Mobile, and Android. Most of them are associated with specific brands of phone made by specific companies while others are open-source and are available on a variety of platforms.

Symbian is primarily found on Nokia phones, but phones by Sharp, Fujitsu, Sony and other companies have the operating system installed as well. Symbian is open source, meaning anyone can use it without having to pay. It is widely used, but it is not the most advanced or full-featured of mobile phone operating systems. Most phones that use Symbian are low-end devices, not full-featured smart phones. Many manufacturers, including Nokia, who had long been the biggest supporter of the OS, have switched over to other operating systems.

One of the most well-known operating systems for mobile phones is the BlackBerry OS. It is the only one of the mobile phone operating systems to be found on BlackBerry devices. The BlackBerry OS is tailor-made for business, with functionality taking a seat over personality or appearance. Its main focus is on messaging, email and other communication features. Media players, and other entrainment-based applications are less-common for the device.

Apple's iOS is found on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Operating system security and compatibility has been a point of contention for some in regards to iOS. It is entirely closed-source, and Apple chooses on its own which software the platform will and will not support. Adobe Flash, for example, does not work on the embedded operating system. Still, it does have a wide variety of apps and an interface that many laud for its ease of use.

Windows Mobile, also known as Windows Phone, is the mobile phone version of Microsoft's operating system. Because of this, it is easily compatible with many Windows programs such as Microsoft Office, making it a popular choice for businesspeople. Windows Mobile was originally designed for Microsoft's line of Pocket PCs before being adapted for use in phones.

The Android is based off of the Linux operating system. Originally developed by an independent organization, it was later bought by Google, although the OS itself remains free and open source. Android is praised by many for his flexibility as a platform. Anyone can develop apps for the OS, and any company can release a phone using it.

There are just some of the mobile phone operating systems currently in use. Palm's webOS, bada from Samsung, and Noki's Maemo are just some of the operating systems that are used on smartphones around the world. Given the ever-changing nature of the technology industry, even more are bound to show up in time.

Sony Vaio

VAIO is a sub-brand for many of Sony's computer products. It was originally an acronym for Video Audio Integrated Operation, but since 2008 amended to Visual Audio Intelligence Organizer to celebrate the brand's 10th year anniversary. The branding was created by Timothy Hanley to distinguish items that encompassed the use of consumer audio and video, as well as being conventional computing products. One example of this was the Sony VAIO W Series personal computer, which functioned as a regular computer and a miniature entertainment center. Steve Jobs, head of Apple announced iPhone to the world in San Francisco, California at the Moscone Center.An iPhone can function as a video camera, camera phone with text messaging and visual voicemail, a portable media player, and an Internet client with e-mail, web browsing, and both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one. Third-party as well as Apple applications are available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has well over 300,000 "apps" approved by Apple. These apps have diverse functionalities, including games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, security and advertising for television shows, films, and celebrities.There are four generations of iPhone models, and they were accompanied by four major releases of iOS (formerly iPhone OS). The original iPhone was a GSM phone that established design precedents like screen size and button placement that have persisted through all models. The iPhone 3G added 3G cellular network capabilities and A-GPS location. The iPhone 3GS added a compass, faster processor, and higher resolution camera, including video.
